FerrumPix: Desktop Photo Management with Editing and Self-Hosted Connections
FerrumPix combines local photo organization, RAW development, pixel editing, and connections to Immich or Nextcloud. Review platform status, map networking, and sidecar-file behavior before adoption.
Project focus
FerrumPix is a desktop photo manager and image editor designed to bring browsing, organizing, culling, RAW development, and deeper editing into one local-first workflow. Its README positions it for hobby photographers and enthusiasts rather than studio pipelines. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0.
The project page lists Linux, Windows, and macOS, while the README describes ARM64 and macOS builds as experimental. Availability should therefore be checked per platform and release. The supplied sources do not confirm supported operating-system versions, hardware requirements, or the complete installer matrix.

Known capabilities
FerrumPix can work with local photo folders and subfolders, generate thumbnails, and provide ratings, favourites, keywords, saved searches, grouping, a photo wall, and a map view. Searches can use metadata such as camera, ISO, aperture, focal length, capture date, and image dimensions. The viewer offers fullscreen mode, zoom, slideshows, side-by-side comparison, histograms, and inline video playback.
Editing features listed by the project include cropping, resizing, rotation, perspective and other distortions, exposure and colour controls, curves, filters, masks, healing, text, shapes, and layers. RAW development and lens correction are also included; the README says measured lens data covers more than 1,500 lenses. Specific camera, lens, and codec compatibility should still be checked individually.
Batch operations cover renaming, conversion, resizing, watermarking, filters, metadata processing, and export. The project lists JPEG, PNG, WEBP, JPEG XL, TIFF, BMP, GIF, and RAW support, while HEIC/HEIF/AVIF are described as read-only. Photoshop files can be opened with their layers. G'MIC integration requires that tool to be installed separately.
FerrumPix can connect to a self-hosted Immich or Nextcloud server for browsing, uploading, downloading, editing, and metadata synchronization. People and location searches can run locally. If the map view is enabled, it uses an internet tile server; the project notes that the provider can learn which area is being viewed. Users with strict network boundaries should evaluate that behavior before enabling maps.

Adoption considerations
The project says originals are not changed behind the user’s back. Edits to RAW and Photoshop files are stored in sidecar files, while other formats are written according to the save operation. Sidecars affect backup, migration, and interoperability, so testing with a copy of an existing library is advisable.
Release 0.9.58-1 lists improvements to the healing brush, photo-wall presentation, filmstrip spacing, and layer alignment and distribution. It also records fixes for multi-layer undo behavior, mask scope, and RAW dimension display. These notes describe the release, but they do not replace validation with your own library, RAW files, and editing workflows.
FerrumPix is a reasonable candidate for individuals who want fewer application changes while managing local photos and possibly an existing Immich or Nextcloud server. The supplied material is not enough to conclude that it provides enterprise support, studio-grade collaboration, a confirmed hardware matrix, or stable production deployment on ARM64 or macOS.
